Selecting Tensile Grips for Metal, Rubber and Copper Wire

Machine capacity is only one part of a tensile testing setup. Grip selection also depends on the specimen, test method and machine connection. Use this guide to prepare a clear enquiry before ordering replacement grips or a new testing system.

Start with your specimen

Information to discuss with your supplier, not a final grip specification
MaterialGrip options to discussInformation needed
Metal coupons and rodsWedge-action grips are a common option for metal testing.Flat or round specimen, thickness or diameter, expected force and jaw-face requirements.
Rubber and flexible specimensRoller or other material-specific gripping arrangements may suit elastomers.Specimen shape, thickness, available gripping length and whether the specimen slips or is damaged at the jaws.
Copper wire and cablePurpose-designed wire and cable grips.Diameter, coating, gripping length, expected breaking force and existing machine connection.

Confirm the final fixture with the supplier against your machine and test method. A grip design used on another system is not automatically compatible with yours.

Check compatibility before quotation

  1. Specimen: send dimensions, material and clear photos of the sample and existing grip.
  2. Force range: share the expected load and the rating of your machine and load cell.
  3. Connection: provide the machine model and details of the existing mounting arrangement.
  4. Test method: identify the customer requirement or test standard and the available test space.
  5. Operation: explain how often samples are changed and whether manual, pneumatic or hydraulic actuation is available on the system.

Download the enquiry checklist (TXT) and complete the fields for your application.

When to ask for a setup review

If samples repeatedly slip, are visibly damaged at the jaws or cannot be positioned consistently, record the issue and contact support. Share photographs, sample dimensions and the current grip model. Calibration checks measurement performance; it does not choose the right fixture or repair damaged jaws.

For machine selection, see our tensile testing machine guide. For measurement enquiries, see testing machine calibration support.

Discuss a grip or fixture requirement

Hung Ta's Seremban team can review your enquiry for spare parts, fixtures or a complete testing system. Confirm compatibility and the final scope before ordering.
